plek is. Volgens prof.
alreeds ‘n baie omvattende (448 bladsye) wiskundestudiegids (Pythagoras
11 NKV) beskikbaar teen slegs R70. What matrics who would like to further their studies at tertiary institutes, must know.
Matrics
and teachers should take note of a report by Alet Rademeyer (“Die
Burger” 10-01-2009: p4) regarding admission requirements. Although some
of the universities believe that it is an exaggeration to say that
universities are concerned about the matric group of 2008, the sharp
increase in the number of learners who obtained university exemption is
a reality which cannot be ignored. It is mentioned in the report that
the number of matrics obtaining university exemption increased from 85
000 in 2007 to 107 000 in 2008. This increase of almost 26% results in
a sharp increase in competition for a place at a university. The sharp
increase in the number of learners who passed mathematics by more than
50% [63 000 in 2008 compared to 25 000 (for HG) in 2007] would also
increase the competition for a place in courses/programmes which
require mathematics. In the same report, prof. Niek Grové, registrar of
the University of Pretoria (UP), indicates that the tertiary
institutions cannot nearly provide in the need of those who would like
to study. According to him the University of Pretoria have received 30
000 applications, while there are only 7 500 places available.
According to prof. Barney Pityana, rector of Unisa who is also cited in
the same report, institutions may not admit more students than the
number determined by the department of education.
We therefore
recommend that matrics who wish to study further at universities and
other tertiary institutions in the natural sciences, engineering,
health sciences, economic sciences, agriculture and other related
directions, should make sure that their marks are well above the
average. In view of the fact that students are INITIALLY admitted on
their grade 11 marks, it is extremely important that learners should
not wait until their grade 12 year to get a foot in the university
door. For this reason Fisichem Publishers, aims to publish a Gr. 11
Physichem and Gr. 11 Balance Sheet during 2009. We already have a very
comprehensive (448 pages) study guide for mathematics available
(Pythagoras 11 NCS) at only R70.
